Expert Pool Care Advice

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is pool filtration so important?

Proper filtration keeps your pool water clean, safe, and clear. Your entire pool volume should circulate through the filter three times daily. Running your filter for at least 24 continuous hours is more effective than shorter cycles.

How do I maintain my pool filter?

That depends on the type of filter you have:

  • Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filter: After cleaning, add one 2lb coffee can of D.E. powder for every 10 sq ft of filter surface. Acid-wash the grids annually to remove calcium buildup.

  • Cartridge Filter: Replace or acid-wash the cartridge once a year.

  • Sand Filter: Replace the sand every 4–5 years. Oils and lotions can quickly reduce sand effectiveness, even if water is circulating.

Never reduce your filtration time – doing so compromises water quality and puts your pool at risk.

Should I leave my pool cover on all the time?

No. Your pool water should be exposed to air at least 50% of the time. Leaving the cover on too long can prevent proper chemical reactions and lead to unbalanced water. Always remove the cover on your scheduled service day.

Why is my pool water cloudy?

Cloudy water is often a sign of poor filtration or overuse of your pool cover. Start by checking your filter and increasing circulation. You may also need to brush and vacuum the pool more frequently.

How do I get rid of algae in my pool?

Some algae strains, like black algae, are tougher to eliminate. Treatment can take time. As algae begins to die, it will turn gray before disappearing. Regular brushing with an algae brush is essential to successful treatment.

Do I really need an automatic pool cleaner?

While not required, automatic pool cleaners save time and effort. Many of our customers say that with one installed, the only maintenance left is filter cleaning. If you don’t have one, manual brushing and vacuuming are a must.

Does Sparkle Pool Service treat spas and hot tubs?

Yes, however, if your spa is connected to the pool system, the chemicals will circulate automatically. Be sure your valves allow the spa water to overflow into the pool when not in use.

What causes eye irritation in pool water?

Eye irritation is usually caused by poor water quality—not chlorine. Chloramines (a byproduct of contaminants reacting with chlorine) are typically the culprit. Solutions include:

  • Keeping your pool and filter clean

  • Reducing organic matter like dirt, urine, and sweat

  • Showering before swimming

  • Super chlorinating to eliminate chloramines

🚿 Always add fresh water after swimming, not before, to prevent imbalance.

How can I keep my pool water sparkling clean?

Clean water is a result of two key things: proper chemical balance (which we handle) and effective filtration (which you maintain). When both work together, you’ll enjoy a safe, crystal-clear pool all season long.

A lifetime of bliss
