If you have had your hot tub running all winter, a few warmer days are the perfect time to drain and refill your hot tub and start fresh. Over time, oils, lotions, and residue build up in the water and inside the plumbing lines. Even when the water looks clean, there can still be gunk hiding in the pipes.
That is why we recommend running a pipe and jet cleaner before you drain. It helps flush out buildup, so your fresh water starts cleaner and is easier to balance. At Sparkle Pool Service, this is the process we recommend.
Step 1: Use a pipe and jet cleaner
Before draining your hot tub, use a pipe and jet cleaner like:
- Life Purge (this is one product called “Life Purge & Jet Line Cleaner”, not two different products)
These products are designed to break down oils, biofilm, and buildup inside spa plumbing.
Step 2: Run the cleaner through your spa
Add the cleaner and run your spa so it can circulate through the plumbing and jets.
A good rule of thumb is:
- 30 minutes with the jets on high
- then 12 to 24 hours on low circulation
Always follow the directions on your specific product label.
Step 3: Drain the hot tub
Once the purge cycle is complete, drain the dirty water. You can do this with:
the spa drain spout, or a submersible pump. Either method is fine. The main goal is getting all that loosened residue out of the system.
Step 4: Wipe down the shell
Before you refill, wipe down the shell and rinse away any remaining debris or residue.
Step 5: Clean or replace filters
While the tub is empty, rinse your filters. If they are worn out or not coming clean, replace them.
Step 6: Refill with fresh water
Refill your hot tub with fresh water.
Step 7: Test and balance the water
After refilling, bring a water sample to Sparkle Pool Service for free water testing.

How often should you drain and refill a hot tub?
Most hot tubs should be drained and refilled every 3 to 4 months, depending on usage.
Saltwater hot tubs typically last longer between drains. A good rule of thumb is about once per year, depending on use and water quality.
If you have had heavy usage, like a get together, you may want to drain and refill sooner.
