Expert Pool Care Advice

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is pool filtration so important?

Filtration keeps water clean, clear, and safe. As a rule, your pool should circulate enough each day to filter the full volume multiple times—longer continuous run times are often more effective than short cycles.

How do I maintain my pool filter?

Filter care depends on type: D.E. filters need proper media recharging; cartridge filters need periodic cleaning/replacement; sand filters typically need sand replacement every few years. If your pressure stays high after cleaning/backwashing, it’s time to inspect the media.

Should I leave my pool cover on all the time?

No. Your pool water should be exposed to air regularly. Leaving a cover on too long can contribute to chemistry imbalance and cloudy water—especially during warmer periods.

How do I get rid of algae in my pool?

Algae treatment takes time and consistent brushing. Some algae types are more stubborn; as treatment works, algae may change color before clearing.

Why is my pool water cloudy?

Cloudiness usually comes from filtration/circulation issues, debris load, or chemistry imbalance. Start by checking the filter, increasing circulation, and brushing/vacuuming.

Do I really need an automatic pool cleaner?

Not required—but it saves time and helps reduce debris load. Without one, frequent brushing and vacuuming are essential.

What causes eye irritation in pool water?

Eye irritation is often caused by poor water quality and chloramine byproducts—not “too much chlorine.” Improving filtration hygiene, reducing organics, and properly shocking can help.

My pump isn’t pulling water—what should I check first?

Start with the pump basket and lid seal (debris/air leaks are common), confirm water level is high enough, then prime the pump if needed.

How often should I backwash a sand filter?

Backwash when pressure rises meaningfully above your clean baseline or when flow drops. Over-backwashing can reduce efficiency; use pressure and clarity as your guide.

When should I call a pro instead of DIY?

If you have persistent low flow, repeated air in the system, visible leaks, heater faults, or recurring algae/cloudiness despite correct steps, it’s time for a diagnostic visit.

A lifetime of bliss
